Book Review: John C. Maxwell – No Limits

John Maxwell is one of my favorites for motivation and inspiration. As a best-selling author, coach, and speaker he really delivers in his book No Limits, an easy-to-read resource that focuses on three life-changing points that can be used in any area of our lives:

  1. AWARENESS: removing the caps
  2. ABILITY: developing the capacities we already have
  3. CHOICES: maximizing our capacity

I have read several of his books, but through this book he has challenged me to discover my unused potential and to grow beyond my perceived limits. Another reason I love this author is because he teaches me that personal growth, and the knack for overcoming challenges are not limited to just one aspect of our lives. In fact, John Maxwell encourages us to “define our world and ourselves in terms of our possibilities”.

Having a different perspective when facing life’s challenges leads to consistent personal growth. When facing challenges related to money, relationships, or life in general, we can apply the concepts and techniques the author outlines in his book to many areas of our lives that may be blocked by what he refers to as “caps.”

As a personal financial coach, I encourage people to understand how their emotions, society, and relationships can impact their financial wellbeing. These areas can have barriers that hold us back from visualizing goals and believing they can be achieved. By changing our perspective and making different choices, we can experience different and better outcomes.

The author also inspires us to remember that what we focus on makes us who we are. This impacts how we see others and how we treat others. It is this awareness that encourages us to look beyond shortcomings so that we can see people’s hearts. This perspective helps us to give rather than take, and to create experiences that we savor, not only for us, but for others.

If you are ready to be honest with yourself, and to set and fulfill realistic goals, then this book is for you. The author’s concepts can expand your life relationally, personally, financially, and professionally.

My biggest take away from this book is that I can choose differently, I can take chances (and fail and try again) and not be afraid to remove the limits I have set on myself. John Maxwell says to “focus less on my fear and more on my dreams”.

From chapter 9, I offer this final quote: “What do you want your life to stand for? As you grow old and draw near to the end of your life, what kind of impact do you want to make on the world?”  John Maxwell makes me feel confident that whether it’s finances, relationships, family, or community, that we all have the capacity to start from within and include others in our journey to reach our goals, achieve our dreams, and enrich the lives of others.
